Martin Luther King ( by Sabrina Luginbühl )

Martin Luther King was born on 15th January 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia USA.His father was a Minister in an african-american Baptist comunity.

Martin admired the black-gospel movement, like his father. He saw the church as an instrument, to improve the living conditions of the black people. 1951 he finished the „Crozer Theological Seminary“ and worked for a short time as a graduate at the University of Boston. During his time in Boston he met Coretta Scott from Marion, Alabama. They married in June 1953 and then he decided to become Minister at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montogomery, Alabama

1953 the Court of Justice of the United Szazes of America proclaimed the racial segregation as illegal. But the reality was different! In public vehicles the racial segregation still ruled. In order to terminate the racist discrimations, some black people from Montogomery began a bus boycott (1955-1956) and selected King as the Leader of their new foundation: “the Montogomery Improvement Association“. During this boycott, which lasted 381 days, he was arrested and brought to jail.

1957 King became President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and he wanted to stand for the right of black people. On the 28th August 1963 250’000 black and white people marched to Wahington,to demonstrate in front of the monument of Abraham Lincoln. There Martin Luther King made his famous speech:
“I have a dream...“.
It was the 3rd April 1968 when he said: „I’ve been to the mountain and saw the promised land.“ One day later he died in Memphis,Tennessee, killed by a murderer.
100’000 people came to Atlanta to his funeral. Since 1986 every 3rd Monday in January is a national holiday in the USA to commemorate Martin Luther King.
