Freddie Mercury ( by Sabrina Rüegg )

Because I like the music by the band „Queen“ and especially Freddie Mercury’s voice, I decided to write about him.

On the 5th September 1946 Freddie Mercury was born on the small island of Zanzibar. His father was an English diplomat. First he got the name Farrokh Bulsara. When he was eight years old, he went to school and his friends began to call him Freddie. Later he changed his family-name into Mercury.

Because of his father‘s job, Freddie Mercury lived until his 13th birthday in Bombay (India). There he learnt to play the piano. After Bombay he moved with his parents and his younger sister Kashmira (born 1952) to London. In London Freddie Mercury finished the normal school education. After he got his diploma in art and design at the „Ealing College of Art“.

Freddie Mercury sang and played in different bands. He admired musicians like Pete Townsend from „The Who“ and Ron Wood from „Faces“.

His college-friend Tim Staffel played in the band „Smile“ until 1969. Freddie Mercury joined in 1970. The other members of this band were called Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Freddie Mercury convinced them to change the name into „Queen“, but at first the other members wouldn‘t do that.

As singer and songe writer Freddie Mercury was the most famous member of „Queen“. He wrote most Queen-songs like „We are the Champions“ and „We will rock you“.

The private person Freddie Mercury was rather shy. Nevertheless he celebrated the wildest parties.

In the middle of the 80s he became HIV positive and got Aids. In spite of his sickness he wrote more songs like „Heaven“. After Freddie Mercury’s death on 24th November 1991, the other members of „Queen“ dissolved the band.
Still today many people buy his CDs and „Queen“ is still very famous.
